Lottomatica and open innovation: how gaming evolves through startups, universities and emerging technologies

Pubblicato il: 10 luglio 2025

In the gaming sector, where technology is constantly reshaping the rules of the game, innovation is not just a choice—it’s a strategic necessity. That’s why in recent years, Lottomatica has embraced an open innovation model that integrates top ideas with external expertise, building an ecosystem where tech startups, Italian universities, and international players collaborate.

This vision has quickly evolved into a strategy that combines internal know-how with external solutions to create more advanced platforms, scalable technologies, and new user experiences. A model that strengthens the ability to innovate quickly, with measurable and lasting results.

Open innovation: a new way to innovate
The concept of Open Innovation, developed by Henry Chesbrough, is based on the idea that companies can (and should) open up to external contributions to fuel their innovation processes. This approach is especially effective in fast-evolving sectors like digital gaming, where progress is driven by AI, data, cloud, mobile-first solutions, and new interaction models.
In this context, gaming startups and research centers are natural partners to develop advanced technologies, experiment with prototypes, and reduce time-to-market.

LAMP: where startups and training meet
A cornerstone of Lottomatica’s strategy is LAMP – Lottomatica Accelerator & Matching Platform.
More than just a platform, LAMP serves as a true accelerator of ideas. On one hand, it enables innovative solutions in key areas such as security, UX, sustainability, and AI; on the other, it plays a crucial role in the continuous tech training of employees.

That’s why the LAMP platform can be seen as a space for technological cross-pollination, where startups’ ideas meet business needs and turn into real, tested, integrated, and scalable solutions.

Innovation and education, starting from school
Within its open innovation approach, Lottomatica also looks at school education as fertile ground to nurture the citizens and professionals of tomorrow. Here are two noteworthy examples.

The TRED High School: innovation for new generations
One of the most significant initiatives is Lottomatica’s partnership with the TRED High School (Ecological and Digital Transition), a four-year experimental program designed to integrate scientific, technological, and humanistic skills.
In June, the company hosted three immersive days for students from the TRED High School in Montefiascone, focused on digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence, ESG topics, and corporate innovation. This initiative helped strengthen the dialogue between schools and businesses, offering students a hands-on look at the challenges and opportunities of the job market.

UER Project: between technology and social cohesion
Another best practice is the collaboration with the European University of Rome (UER), which—supported by Fondazione Lottomatica—launched a psycho-socio-educational project for students at the “Ettore Majorana” High School in Latina. The goal: to tackle bias and promote inclusion among teenagers.
The project involved 120 students and used immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality along with participatory activities. The results? 83% of the participants reported feeling more aware of the impact of bias in relationships and more open to cultural differences.

An Italian model of shared innovation
Lottomatica’s commitment to open innovation creates value that goes beyond the company’s boundaries. It generates real opportunities for young talents, enhances Italian academic excellence, and reinforces Italy’s role as a digital innovation hub in the European gaming sector.
Through a model based on collaboration, experimentation, and an open mindset, Lottomatica is building a sustainable future for the industry—where technology is undoubtedly an enabler, but human capital is the real driver of change.
