Lottomatica for the Circular Economy: Refurbished Devices and Tech Sustainability

Pubblicato il: 08 settembre 2025

In the field of technology, acting sustainably means extending the useful life of devices, reducing their environmental impact, and promoting responsible resource management. This is the essence of the circular economy: a virtuous model based on repair, reuse, and waste reduction.

Lottomatica has chosen to apply these principles to its technological infrastructure, adopting a concrete and systemic approach that integrates innovation, operational efficiency, and environmental care. This commitment is outlined in the 2024 Sustainability Report and supported by measurable projects, such as the Repair Lab.

A New Paradigm for Public Gaming: Circularity and Technological Innovation
Sustainability in public gaming cannot overlook the responsible management of the tech devices that support daily operations. Terminals, equipment, electronic components, and digital systems require increasingly sustainable processes of maintenance, upgrading, and disposal.

In the gaming sector, the circular economy serves as a strategic lever to address the global issue of electronic waste (e-waste) and to ensure more sustainable management of technological infrastructures. This approach makes it possible to cut emissions, minimize the use of new resources, and contribute to companies’ climate and environmental goals.

Lottomatica’s Strategy for Sustainable Innovation
Within the context of innovation and technology in the gaming sector, Lottomatica stands out for a sustainability model applied to the entire life cycle of technological devices. The strategy is built on solid ESG governance, structured operational initiatives, and a vision that integrates social responsibility with environmental performance.

A major contribution to this vision comes from the LESS Strategy (Lottomatica Environmental Sustainability Strategy), launched in summer 2024. This is an integrated, cross-functional action plan developed thanks to the commitment of all business areas. The LESS Strategy is structured around three areas of intervention, each featuring programs and objectives aimed at significantly reducing the Group’s carbon footprint and laying the foundation for achieving net-zero.

All initiatives are guided by a logic of continuous improvement and designed to consolidate Lottomatica’s leadership in sustainability in public gaming.

ESG Governance and Responsible Risk Management
Lottomatica has developed an environmental management system capable of preventing risks related to device management while also seizing the opportunities offered by circularity.

Corporate sustainability thus becomes a strategic driver for the Group, which constantly monitors the environmental performance of its assets and invests in solutions to reduce impacts in the medium to long term.

The Repair Lab: The Heart of Circular Economy at Lottomatica
The Repair Lab is one of the key elements of Lottomatica’s circular economy approach. It is an in-house facility within the licensed company, dedicated to the maintenance, repair, and sustainable management of devices.

Every year, over 12,000 pieces of equipment are recovered, upgraded, or disposed of in a controlled manner. In this sense, the Repair Lab makes it possible to:

  • reduce device obsolescence;

  • limit the purchase of new terminals;

  • ensure controlled and sustainable disposal twice a year;

  • extend the life cycle of devices, generating both environmental and economic benefits.

This technical unit is an integral part of the ESG strategy and contributes to Lottomatica’s environmental goals, particularly in reducing impacts and curbing indirect emissions.

Other Lottomatica Actions for a Virtuous Device Cycle
Beyond the Repair Lab, Lottomatica carries out numerous initiatives aimed at sustainable and responsible technology management:

  • buy-back and reuse of electronic devices at the Aldobrandeschi headquarters;

  • donation of still-functioning equipment to external organizations;

  • waste sorting for proper disposal of materials;

  • use of FSC-certified paper for all internal paper-based activities;

  • process digitalization through the GoSign platform, which reduces paper consumption and improves document efficiency;

  • “Become Green” project (ongoing in 2024) to promote operational sustainability at company sites;

  • launch of the Carbon Footprint Assessment (CFP) planned for 2025, aimed at mapping and reducing the Group’s CO₂ emissions.

These actions reinforce Lottomatica’s position as a national benchmark for sustainability in gaming and legal gambling.

Expected Results and Future Outlook
The circular economy initiatives implemented by Lottomatica generate concrete impacts on multiple fronts:

  • reduction of electronic waste;

  • optimization of procurement and maintenance costs;

  • greater operational efficiency;

  • contribution to European ESG objectives (in line with CSRD and ESRS).

Looking ahead, Lottomatica aims to extend the Repair Lab model to other areas of its technological supply chain and to promote further forms of sustainable innovation in the public gaming sector.

Lottomatica: A Benchmark for Tech Sustainability
The approach adopted by Lottomatica demonstrates that technological sustainability is not just an ethical choice, but also a lever for efficiency, reputation, and competitiveness. A concrete and replicable model, starting from device management to generate environmental, economic, and social value.

Fabio De Santis, Chief Operating Officer, Lottomatica Group:
“As the leading operator in the gaming market, Lottomatica’s commitment is not only to ensuring operational efficiency, but also to driving a cultural shift. Projects like the Repair Lab prove that technology and environmental responsibility can—and must—coexist, generating lasting value for both the company and society.”
