On May 27, 2025, the presentation of the Second Eco-Social Barometer was held in Rome.
The report, curated by Professor Maurizio Ferrera and produced by Percorsi di secondo welfare for Fondazione Lottomatica, explores the social implications of the ecological transition in Europe and Italy.
During the event, the latest SWG survey commissioned by Fondazione Lottomatica was also presented. The survey gathers Italians’ opinions on key topics related to energy, environmental sustainability, and the future of the ecological transition.
The event proved to be a valuable opportunity for dialogue among experts, institutional representatives, and stakeholders on an issue that is more urgent than ever: how to make the energy transition socially and economically sustainable.
Towards a just transition: insights from the Barometer and SWG survey
The combined analysis of the two tools reveals a complex yet clear picture: both Italians and Europeans are calling for a fair ecological transition—one that balances environmental goals with social justice and economic sustainability.
Key findings include:
57% of Italians are in favor of a return to nuclear energy;
64% support investments in the new generation of nuclear plants;
Only 1 in 3 Italians approves of the planned 2035 ban on the sale of combustion engine vehicles;
At the European level, between 45% and 55% of citizens fear that environmental policies may negatively impact vulnerable segments of the population.
The report also highlights that 65% of Europeans demand a fair distribution of the efforts required to tackle climate change, and nearly half would only accept change in exchange for tangible benefits.
